Program Overview
Our 10-week program offers more than just exposure to legal work—it’s an integrated experience designed to help summer associates understand what it means to practice law at a leading Florida-based land use, zoning, environmental, and government relations firm. Associates gain insight into the real-world practice of law through meaningful assignments, direct client exposure, and team collaboration. The program also highlights BRFLT’s distinct culture: professional excellence, responsiveness, and a results-oriented mindset grounded in collegiality.
We begin interviews in May of each year and encourage applications from rising 2Ls at both our partner law schools and others where we may not conduct on-campus interviews. Applicants should submit a cover letter, résumé, and law school transcript. In addition to strong academic performance, we value diverse perspectives, work experience, leadership ability, and a demonstrated interest in our core practice areas.
Hands-On Work Experience
Summer associates work on substantive, real-world matters across the firm’s primary practice areas. These may include:
- Research and drafting for land use petitions, zoning appeals, or litigation support;
- Assisting in client presentations before government boards and agencies;
- Preparing development agreements, legislative analyses, and memoranda;
- Attending public hearings, negotiations, and strategy meetings;
- Observing litigation, transactional closings, and environmental permitting matters.
We do not assign summer associates to a specific department—instead, you’ll rotate across a variety of practice areas, gaining perspective on how interdisciplinary knowledge and regulatory strategy intersect to drive client outcomes. Associates are encouraged to express preferences and interests as they discover where they thrive.
Mentorship & Development
Each summer associate is paired with a dedicated associate mentor, in addition to ongoing interaction with partners and other firm leaders. Your mentor serves as a touchpoint for navigating assignments, understanding firm culture, and refining professional goals. Our lawyers are intentional about knowledge-sharing—many have themselves come through the BRFLT summer program and are committed to providing practical guidance.
Associates are also invited to attend internal trainings, client briefings, and strategic firmwide meetings. From land development code amendments to emerging policy issues, you’ll have a front-row seat to how our team translates complex legal issues into strategic advantage for our clients.
Feedback & Growth
We believe in continuous feedback. Assigning attorneys provide informal evaluations throughout the program to help sharpen your legal analysis, writing, and professional judgment. In addition, summer associates participate in weekly check-ins with mentors and receive a formal review at the end of the program, including a self-evaluation component. These discussions are designed to help you reflect on your experience, identify growth opportunities, and plan next steps in your legal career.
