The La Gorce Country Club has submitted an application to the Miami Beach Design Review Board to construct a new 74,000-square-foot clubhouse at its property at 5685 Alton Road.
The proposal, which would replace an existing 45,000-square-foot clubhouse, is scheduled to be heard by the board on Sept. 11.
According to a letter of intent filed on behalf of the club by attorney Michael Larkin of the Miami-based law firm Bercow Radell Fernandez Larkin & Tapanes, the La Gorce requests both design review approval and permission to build the small structure.
The project’s scope includes the demolition of the current clubhouse and the construction of several new facilities, including a two-story clubhouse building, a three-story wellness building with a basement, a new pro shop, a golf performance center, new tennis and padel courts, a gatehouse and comfort stations.
Architectural and landscape plans for the project were prepared by Hart Howerton, a New York-based firm. The application materials detail a comprehensive plan that includes new planting, hardscape and resiliency features to address the challenges of sea-level rise.
In La Gorce’s letter of intent, Larkin stated the club’s goal is to “enhance the experience for both members and neighbors.” The current clubhouse was built in 2004, and the club’s leadership believes the new, larger facility is necessary to meet modern standards.
The project is in the pre-application stage, and final approval will depend on a vote from design review board members following the September meeting.
La Gorce is considered one of the most exclusive country clubs in South Florida and is not currently accepting new members. A Financial Times article published last year cited an anonymous caddie who claimed that DJ Khaled has applied for membership but has been unable to gain entry.
