SFBJ Names Melissa Tapanes Llahues to Its ’40 Under 40′ List of Awardees

(MIAMI) June 28, 2017 – The South Florida Business Journal (SFBJ) has named Bercow Radell Fernandez & Larkin shareholder Melissa Tapanes Llahues one of its 2017 “40 Under 40,” a prestigious recognition coveted by young professionals throughout the U.S.

SFBJ’s “40 Under 40” is one of its most popular award programs. The award recognizes professionals in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties for outstanding success and contributions to their community. They were selected from hundreds of nominations and represent some the region’s most entrepreneurial and influential young leaders.

They will be celebrated Aug. 4 at a luncheon at Jungle Island in Miami. The event’s corporate sponsors are Florida International University Business School, Grove Bank & Trust and GCI Worldwide Corp.

In addition to the scope of work she performs on behalf of her real estate clients, Melissa is also extremely involved in community organizations as a leader. She was recently installed as the Chair of the Florida International University President’s Council, and she serves on the Executive Board of the Latin Builders Association.

She taken an active role in mentoring students in the LBA’s Construction and Business Management Academy Charter High School, and she has donated her time to help the school with zoning approval for a new high school campus in Hialeah Gardens.

Melissa is also involved with the Friends of the Underline, and is at the forefront of turning that vision into a reality.

In addition, Melissa’s community involvement also currently includes membership in the Florida Bar, Section of Environmental and Land Use Law, where she serves as the liaison to the FIU College of Law; and membership in the Cuban American Bar Association; Dade County Bar Association, Environmental Land Use Law Committee; Florida International University Alumni Association; and Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Miami. She is also the former chairwoman of the City of Doral Design District Steering Committee.

This fall, a symposium on real estate development and historic preservation will take place in early November at the Olympia Theater in downtown Miami. Open to the public and to professionals (for continuing education credits), the program is a partnership Melissa helped create between the Dade Heritage Trust, History Miami, the Latin Builders Association, and the Builders Association of South Florida. The goal is to find common ground for a dialogue about making the city a better place to live.

Melissa was recently recognized as a “Rising Star” by the well-respected legal publication Super Lawyers and a “Recommended Attorney” by “The Legal 500,” in addition to prestigious citations for her law firm by Chambers USA and U.S. News & Best Lawyers.

Melissa received her bachelor’s degree from Florida International University Honors College, Magna Cum Lauder, in 2000 and her Juris Doctor degree in 2003 from the University of Miami School of Law.
