CLIENT NEWS: Hospitality Tracker: Philippe Chow plans South Beach location

July 25, 2023

New York-based Philippe Chow hopes to occupy the coveted restaurant space at One Ocean South Beach, according to site plans submitted to the city of Miami Beach.

The eatery would offer its Beijing-inspired cuisine in the entire ground-floor space at the condominium in the heart of the South of Fifth neighborhood. The building is owned by Los Angeles-based Black Lion Investment Group.

Founded by its namesake chef, the first Philippe Chow restaurant opened in Manhattan in 2005. In 2019, a second New York outpost opened in the Meatpacking District.

The proposal for the Miami Beach location will go before the city’s Planning Board on July 25.

If approved, the restaurant will occupy 13,500 square feet on the corner of South Pointe Drive and Ocean Drive. Black Lion Investment Group, led by President Robert Rivani, paid $12 million for the One Ocean space in November.

The applicant proposes a total of 329 seats, including 224 in the main dining room and 105 outdoors along South Pointe Drive and Ocean Drive, according to the application.

Philippe Chow is requesting that the interior dining room operate until 2 a.m., and the exterior seating be open until midnight. The applicant intends to be open for lunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Notably, no seating is proposed for the existing covered terrace on the north side of the property, between the commercial units and the residential tower. Instead, the terrace would be enclosed and converted into kitchen space. Residents of One Ocean support that plan, rather than using it as exterior seating associated with the commercial units, according to the developer’s letter of intent.

Attorneys Michael Larkin and Nicholas Rodriguez-Caballero, who represent the applicant, did not respond to request for comment. Kobi Karp Architecture designed the project.

Phillipe Chow, through a franchiser, previously had restaurants in Boca Raton and Miami Beach, but they were closed due to a Chapter 7 case in 2013.
